Ingredients
- Cream Cheese: Always use room temperature, softened cream cheese. Regular cream cheese works best; do not use low-fat or fat-free such ingredients as they do not give out the best end result.
- Butter: At room temperature butter improves the mixing process.
- Powdered Sweeteners: To prevent frosting from becoming grainy, make sure that the sweetener is powdered.
- Vanilla Extract: (optional) – Sometimes I add a little and sometimes I don’t so I’m leaving this as optional.
How To Make Keto Cream Cheese Frosting
- First Step: Using an electric stand mixer or a hand mixer in a medium-large bowl, cream the cream cheese with butter until light and fluffy. Remember to scrape the sides where needed.
- Step Two: To the cream cheese mixture, add the powdered sweetener. Beat for 2-3 minutes until fluffy. Scrape the sides down if necessary and continue beating.
Variations
You’ll see that it’s not only on what this low-carb cream cheese frosting recipe goes, but it easily adjusts too. Try some of these delicious ideas:
Strawberries: Mix in some pureed strawberries in the frosting. It will turn pink and give an amazing fruity flavor to it. I recommend half a cup of strawberries in the beginning. You can use one sliced fruit as garnishing to complete its look.
Lemons: Sprinkle a little bit of lemon zest and freshly squeezed lemon juice. So easy to make, especially for summer months; it will give such a great spin on Lemon Buttercream Frosting.
Chocolate: Mix 1/2 cup of cocoa into cream cheese mixture. Rich, vibrant, and practically heavenly. Sprinkle some chocolate on top as a garnish and it would look amazing.
Blueberries: Mix in some blueberries with the frosting as this gives it a nice purple color very suitable for a dessert table.
Coffee: – If you are a fanatic of coffee, then just add instant espresso powder in the frosting. I would go with just one tablespoon, so it’s not overpowering.

I use this cream cheese icing for so many things. I love it on Mini Carrot Cake Cookies and Keto Carrot Cake. It’s amazing on Keto Zucchini Bread or Keto Zucchini Muffins.

No, regular powdered sugar cannot be used on keto. That is why I make my powdered erythritol with my cream cheese frosting homemade. It provides the same texture and flavor without all of the sugar contained.
Is It Okay to Leave Icing Out Overnight?
No, you absolutely cannot leave a sugar-free frosting with cream cheese out for overnight. Cream cheese can only be left out for no more than 2 hours, so extended times allow the growth of bacteria to possibly develop and make you sick.
The best options would be refrigerating all the frosting or placing frosted baked goods in the refrigerator until ready to use.

This cream cheese icing is keto, whereas store-bought and traditional cream cheese icing is not since it calls for added sugar.
How Long Does Frosting Last?
This keto cream cheese frosting will keep in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. If you are ready to apply the frosting and do not wish to use it right now place it in the refrigerator to thaw for some hours or overnight. It may take several hours or overnight to let it completely soften.
Some Other Recommendations
Thicker Frosting: If you wish to make frosting with thick icing, then do so by adding a little more of the powdered sweetener or put frosting in the fridge for about 30 minutes.
Lighter Frosting: If a fluffier whipping of the frosting is desired, then freeze the frosting and complete the whipping of the frosting a few minutes longer, 2-3 on high.
Storage Tip: In case there is some frosting left after cake decoration, keep it covered in a container which is free of air in order to avoid absorption of other fridge odors.
